It may seem crazy to be “making over” a new house!  We moved in such a hurry there were still things we wanted to do.  Also, after you’ve lived in it for awhile you start to figure out what works and what doesn’t.  Luckily I have a handy husband!  He did ask me the other day if we were “done”-hahahaha!  That was pretty funny.

So I knew I wanted an old church pew in our mudroom.  My brother in law found one on Craig’s List for $35!  It was too long so my husband cut it down.  Only problem was it had a leg in the middle.  To remove it would have compromised the bench.  So we decided to keep it.  Now we have a three legged pew!  It makes a perfect cubby for our shoe basket.  It was a dark brown so we sanded it and white washed it.  Not bad for a first attempt!

It was fine but we were outgrowing the little hooks and I wanted something larger and more sturdy to hold everything.

After searching for ideas I decided to go with board and batten like our entry way and dining room.

 

Here is handy hubby in action measuring and planning.

After it was drawn out on the wall he nailed 1×6 horizontally and on the outside edges and 1×4 vertically to the wall.

Next he filled in the holes and edges then sanded.  Next came the painting.  We used Sherwin Williams Alabaster.  It’s my most favorite white.  It’s not too stark but not too creamy.

Hooks installed and it was ready to go!

I moved the bulletin board to the other side of the wall.  Now I can reach it much easier.

Barn door made by handy hubby and his dad while we were building the house.  I love how rustic it is and it adds warmth to all the white.

Through opening is the laundry room where I spend most of my time 😉

 

I’m still deciding if I need a shelf at the top of the board and batten.  What do you think?  Definitely want to hang something if we don’t do a shelf.

I hope you liked our little project!  I love having all the space and hooks to hang book bags, jackets, etc.  It really brings the room together.
